Shower filters and flow: what to check before buying
A shower filter can change the feel of your shower. That does not tell you how well it removes a contaminant. Treat water flow and filtration performance as separate questions when comparing products.
Flow and pressure are different
Flow is the volume delivered over time. Pressure is the force available in the plumbing. Spray shape also changes how a shower feels: a focused spray can feel stronger without delivering more water. A filter does not create additional supply pressure.
Measure your starting point
Use the same container and shower setting before and after installation. Record the container volume and the seconds required to fill it. Keep the temperature comfortable and handle a full container carefully.
- Litres per minute = container litres × 60 ÷ fill time in seconds.
- Repeat the measurement to check consistency.
- Record the filter model, installation date and cartridge age alongside your result.
This is a household comparison, not a calibrated laboratory test. If filling a container is impractical, compare the manufacturer’s rated flow and return policy instead.
Check the filtration claim separately
Look for independent certification for the exact model and claim. NSF/ANSI 177 addresses free available chlorine reduction in shower filtration systems. It does not turn a chlorine claim into proof of hardness reduction or a health benefit.
Ask the seller for the rated operating temperature, flow, capacity and replacement interval. A long list of media or “stages” is not a substitute for test evidence.
When flow changes after installation
Follow the manufacturer’s installation and flushing instructions. Check fitting compatibility, hose kinks and visible debris. If flow deteriorates over time, check the cartridge replacement guidance. If you see leaks, stop using the installation until the problem is resolved.
Do not remove safety components or modify a filter to improve flow. For a persistent plumbing problem, ask a qualified plumber.
A useful buying checklist
- Does the exact model have evidence for the contaminant you want to reduce?
- Is its rated flow suitable for your shower?
- Can you buy replacement cartridges locally, and what do they cost?
- Does it fit your existing plumbing without unsafe modifications?
- Can you return it if the spray or flow does not suit you?
